AMD is targeting increased storage throughput with its latest southbridge chip, the SB800, the first of the company’s expected “Fusion” design that sports an integrated GPU.
Details released this week show an on-board Ethernet controller capable of supporting the new 6 Gbps SATA drives as well as four PCIe 2.0 slots. The related USB handler will be able to support up to 14 2.0 ports, double the number of the current SB700 device.
The higher-speed connections are apparently intended to improve communications with both the Northbridge and the CPU, most likely to accommodate the more powerful processors coming down the pike and to enhance the Hyper Transport interconnect in light of new competition from Intel’s Quick Path bus.
